Leveling Program

Revised Leveling Policy

[Please note that this page contains new/revised content effective as of Sept. 1, 2005.]

"Leveling" in the instrumental curriculum is a system designed to acssess the achievement and progress of each student.

The Instrumental Music Department of the Milton Public Schools has revised the leveling curriculum. Instead of students taking four benchmark leveling tests during their years in the Milton Music Program, they will be continuously assessed in both written and playing tests every year. We are confident this new approach of testing the students will encourage their progress in a more measured and consistent way.

These are the changes:

  1. Students and teachers are not required to use a particular lesson book or teach a designated etude or recital piece. Teachers may choose any method book which will best suit their students' needs.
  2. Students and teachers will be given a list of skills and concepts they are expected to cover per grade level. Quarterly progress reports will be sent home by BOTH the ensemble director and the lesson teacher.
  3. Students will receive a recommendation for middle and high school ensembles based on their end-of-the-year evalaution in 5th and 8th grade.

This new Policy Information supersedes any older information that previously appeared on this web site. If you have any questions, please contact your child's ensemble director:
